1 - Introduction to the 'Edit user' page

When you load the edit user page, most users will see two tabs ("Basic information" and "Password") as shown below:

The "Basic information" tab lets you edit everything apart from your password, which is on the "Password" tab.

When you updated your details and/or password click the "Update user" button to save changes.

If incorrect information is entered (e.g. an invalid email an error message will be shown and you must correct this before clicking "Update user" again to save.

If your account has the permissions, this page may also let you perform more advanced operations like changing user groups, editing other users, and deleting users. These features are explained in the user management section of the user guide.

2 - Editing your user details

2.1 - Changing your username

Some users account types do not have permission to change their own username.

This is the username you use when logging in to the site, so it is important you remember it!

Your username must be between 3 and 30 characters long and can only contain lowercase letters, numbers, dashes, and full stops. If there is a problem with the username you enter, an error message will be shown after you click "Update user".

When you update your username, you are sent an email about this change which you can keep for your records.

2.2 - Changing your password

Use the "Password" tab to change your password.

For security reasons, you must enter your current password if you want to change your password.

Enter your new password twice (to ensure it's not mistyped) and click "Update user". Passwords must be 6 characters or longer. A strong password will include a combination of lowercase, UPPERCASE, numbers and symbols.

A phpShadow system will never email you your password (only a new password reset), or request your password by email.

2.3 - Changing your email address

You should ensure that your email address is kept up to date as if you forget your password or your username is updated, this is where new details will be sent.

Ticking the "Hide this from other users" checkbox will mean that only administrators will be able to view your email. Otherwise, other logged in site users will be able to see your email address. Note: User email addresses are never revealed to the general public.
