Details tab

The details tab of the editing page allows you to change the page name, the parent page, and the description - but only if you have permission to do so. If you cannot edit all or some of these items then either the page will be a locked system page, or your user account will not have been granted permission to edit these regions.

The details tab also displays the page location, with a link to -> move page location if you have permission to move it. See the moving pages article for more information.

Page name

The page name is the name used to refer to the page by the phpShadow system. It is used in the following locations:

  • On most phpShadow sites, the page name will be displayed in the browser title bar or tab title - often along with the site name. For example the browser title for this page is "Details tab - phpShadow Support".
  • If the page is used as an internal site link, then the page name will be the link title used.
  • Most sites use a "You are here" style bar like the one at the top of this page. The page name (and the page name of parent pages) is used here.
  • For site users, the page name is shown in the page list and pages can be sorted alphabetically by name in this list.

Parent page

The parent page should be another site page that covers a broad topic, where the page you are editing is just a part of that topic. Any particular page may be the parent page to many 'child' pages, which may all go into more detail on specific aspects of the parent page.

Alternatively parent pages can be used to divide the site into several mains sections - the page introducing each section will have many child pages.

There is also no limit to parent page 'depth' - Page Z could be parent of Y, which is parent of X, parent of W, parent of V...etc.

The parent page is used when constructing the "You are here" bar that many phpShadow sites use. The parent of each parent page is traced back until a page with no parent is found - this form the "You are here" bar. So in the bar just above this article, you can see that the parent of this page is "Editing pages", and the parent of that is "Creating, editing and deleting pages" and so on.

On the page list pages are by default displayed below their parent page, so a hierarchy is formed where each page has its child pages listed - and they in turn have their children listed if they have any.

Description

The page description is optional, but if given this will be added to the page in a hidden tag that search engines like Google can see. Search engines will use the page description in their search algorithm to try and deliver better results. The text may also be used in the search engine results list, instead of snippets of the page content.

A good page description describes the purpose and/or content of the page clearly, whilst ideally not being over about 155 characters long.

Don't worry though - if you leave the description blank on some or all pages, your site won't be penalised in search engine results.
