Choosing a page to edit

This page gives instructions on how to start editing a page, for actual editing help see editing pages.

Introduction

Broadly speaking, there are two different types of pages you may want to edit on your site:

  • Simple pages: these are pages where the content is a single column of text (and images) over the whole page area width.
  • Pages with regions: these pages have a more complicated layout, often two or more columns and may appear divided into 'boxes' or 'regions'. Often the site homepage may be a page with several different regions.

Simple pages are very straightforward to edit. On pages with regions you have to choose which region you edit (e.g. the main text column; the right hand side bar; etc).

Once you have opened the editor for a page or region, the editing process is the same: see the editing pages article.

The page below is divided into 4 sections describing: (click on a section in this list to scroll down to it)

  1. Overview of the site page list
  2. How to start editing simple pages
  3. What if you don't see what you expect in the editor?
  4. How to start editing regions

1 - Overview of the site page list

All site pages are listed on the site page list, found at website-name.com/page-list. This page displays a table of all site pages. You can get to the page list from your dashboard: use the "Edit/delete pages" link in the "Manage pages" section.

All pages you have permission to view will have their page location (URL) hyperlinked in the second column of the table. If the location is not hyperlinked, then you do not have permission to view that page.

If you have permissions to edit, move, or delete a page, you will see the appropriate links in the table. This sample table row shows these links:

2 - How to start editing simple pages

To start editing simple pages, you could click the "? edit" link on the page list, as shown above.

However it is often easier to go to the page you want to edit, then click the "edit" link in the edit toolbar (the toolbar usually appears as a black bar at the top of every page when you're logged in, but on some sites might be on the left hand side of the page instead).

Clicking either of these "edit" links will take you to edit the page. See the editing pages article for more information on the edit process from here on.

If you don't see the page content in the editor as you'd expect, see the section below, "What if you don't see what you expect in the editor?".

3 - What if you don't see what you expect in the editor?

If you follow the steps above but don't see the page content in the edit, it's likely that you're trying to edit a page with regions.

You may see text that doesn't make much sense in the editor, similar to this perhaps:

{{region-rotator:3,4,5:620:150:10:#E0E4E0}}
{{region:1}} {{region-rotator:6,7,8,9:300::20:#E0E4E0}}
{{latest-tweet:username}}

Don't edit this unless you know what you're doing!

Cancel, and go back to the page you're trying to edit without making any changes. Then follow the instructions below, "How to start editing regions"

4 - How to start editing regions?

To edit a page with regions, first go the page you want to edit.

You should see that each section of the page (that you have permission to edit) has a small "edit" link in its top right hand corner.

For example the page below has three of these small "edit" links (they are in red on this site). Clicking each link allows you to edit (clockwise from top) the top banner; the right hand banner-column; the main content area.

When you move your mouse over a region "edit" link, the region background will fade to grey to show you exactly the area you're about to edit. Note that this colour change does not happen if the region already has a background colour, such as the banners in the example above.

When you click the "edit" link on a region, you will be taken to edit that region. This is basically the same as editing a page (you just can't change whole page properties, like page name). See the editing pages article for more information on the edit process from here on.
