Adding links to pages

This page gives instructions on adding hyperlinks to pages that you are editing. For more general information on editing pages, see editing pages.

Introduction

Make your site easier for users to navigate by adding links (or hyperlinks) between pages as appropriate. This page tells you how to add links to text in the page content you are editing. 

Before starting, make sure you are editing the page you wish to put the link on. Make sure that you are looking at the "Content" tab (where you can type in the page text).

1 - Linking to pages on your site

To link to another page on your website, follow the instructions below.

  1. In the page editor, select the word or phrase you want to be the link text, so that it is highlighted.
  2. Click the "Link" button in the editor toolbar: 
  3. A small window will appear. In the drop-down box labelled "Link to", select "Another page on this site" if it isn't already selected.
  4. A drop-down menu labelled "Page to link to" will appear. Select the site page from this list.
  5. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window to close it.
  6. The link should have appeared on the words you selected.
  7. Be sure to test the new link once you have saved the page!

2 - Linking to other websites

To add a link to a page or file on another website, follow the instructions below. Make sure you have the web address you want to link to ready.

  1. In the page editor, select the word or phrase you want to be the link text, so that it is highlighted.
  2. Click the "Link" button in the editor toolbar: 
  3. A small window will appear. In the drop-down box labelled "Link to", select "A web address" if it isn't already selected.
  4. Type in, or copy/paste in, the web address to the text box labelled "URL".
  5. You don't have to change any of the other settings, so click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window to close it.
  6. The link should have appeared on the words you selected.
  7. Be sure to test the new link once you have saved the page!

3 - Linking to uploaded files

To link to a file you have already uploaded to the website, follow the instructions below.

If you want to upload a new file to link to whilst editing, see this support page for instructions on uploading whilst editing.

If the uploaded file is an image: You may wish to display it on the page instead of just giving a link to it. Read the introduction and sections 2 & 3 of this support page for instructions.

  1. In the page editor, select the word or phrase you want to be the link text, so that it is highlighted.
  2. Click the "Link" button in the editor toolbar: 
  3. A small window will appear. In the drop-down box labelled "Link to", select "An uploaded file".
  4. A drop-down menu labelled "Upload to link to" will appear. Select the file from this list.
  5. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window to close it.
  6. The link should have appeared on the words you selected.
  7. Be sure to test the new link once you have saved the page!
